Knowledge for Unpacking Novel Sustainable Technologies*
* We called our project K.U.N.S.T. as a tongue-in-cheek nod to the German words “Kunst” (art) and “Kunstoff” (plastic). The backronym? Let’s just say... it’s more recyclable than official!
Goal
We aim to investigate packaging materials in the food sector, particularly comparing traditional plastic and seaweed-based packaging.
The project includes comparing their environmental impact through a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), in addition to identifying the factors influencing packaging choices by food retailers and consumers via interviews and surveys and whether their awareness of the environmental impact affects their choices.
We expect to publish our final results by April 2026.
- How do plastic and seaweed-based packaging compare across their entire life cycle?
- How do consumers perceive the environmental implications of plastic vs seaweed-based packaging?
- What practical or economic barriers (e.g., availability, accessibility, cost, performance) limit the adoption of seaweed-based packaging?
